that is only if you get a data plan. but 500 for a 16GB hard drive is at least 200 dollars too much.

Right. I already pay $30/month for a data plan for my iphone which is just like the ipad only smaller (which is better because I can put it in my purse/pocket) and it is a PHONE.
I guess the iPad is not geared toward a consumer like me — a stay-at-home mom with a laptop and an iPhone already at hand. Maybe they are looking toward the college kids who can use this in the classroom setting?
